An Intern’s Perspective:

Sitting at my desk and crossing things off from my to-do list, I am distracted by something that I cannot get off my mind- America. Today, as we remember the attacks 12 years ago on September 11th, I imagine many people around the country are singing these lines “Land that I love. Stand beside her. And guide her, through the night with a light from above.” I do not know about you, but I get emotional at these ringing words. I think about the men and women who have and continue fighting for our country. I don’t know about you, but this is the land that I love and I will stand beside her- no matter what she is facing.

September is also Hunger Action Month. Often times it is easy to forget just how BIG a problem hunger is in our country. It is especially easy to forget about the hungry who live in our own communities. These people are our classmates, co-workers, and even friends. Only two years ago, 50.1 million Americans did not know when or where they would get a meal. Unfortunately, since then the numbers are only going up. In fact, in Mississippi there are 209,980 children alone who said the Pledge of Allegiance this morning, ate lunch in the cafeteria, and will go to sleep tonight with an empty belly. This is a problem that can and must stop. We can stop our friends from going hungry in our communities, in Mississippi, and in America. What are you going to do to stand beside her- to fight hunger this month in the land that you love?

Extra Table has a lot of ways for you to be involved during Hunger Action Month. But it starts with you. Talk about it with your friends, family, and neighbors. If people do not know about the problem, we cannot stop it. We need your help. So put on your work boots and join us this month. Raven says it best with this, “For the disabled veteran who fought for my freedom, we’ll fight for his right to a meal.”
